TSA Requirements

Learn who is required to complete a TSA Security Threat Assessment (STA), how to apply, and what to expect throughout the approval process before beginning your flight training.


Who Must Apply?
The requirement to undergo a Security Threat Assessment (STA) applies to any individual who is not a U.S. citizen or U.S. national, including:
• Aliens seeking flight training in the United States.
• Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card holders).
• Asylum Seekers (Asylees), Refugees, and Parolees.
• Candidates Training Outside the U.S. if they are seeking a U.S. airman certificate.
 

Training Events Requiring TSA Vetting:
An STA is required for the following flight training events:
• Type Ratings: Specific certifications required to operate certain types of aircraft. 
• Recurrent Training for type rating: Required to maintain or renew an existing type rating.
Note: U.S. citizens and nationals do not need to undergo an STA but must provide proof of citizenship to their training provider.


Where and How to Apply

Candidates must apply directly through the FTSP Portal.

Step 1: Create an Account

  • Visit the FTSP Portal and select “Register Options” and then “Candidate Portal” to set up a permanent account.

Step 2 – Complete the Online STA Application

  • Log in and fill out all required biographic information across six steps, including your personal details, citizenship history, and employment.

Step 3 – Upload Documents

  • You must provide clear images of your identity documents.
  • A current passport is the primary identity document for most candidates.
  • Asylees and refugees without a passport may provide alternate identification, such as a U.S. Employment Authorization Document (EAD) or Permanent Resident Card combined with a U.S. driver’s license.

Step 4 – Pay the Fee

  • After submitting the application, pay the required fee via Pay.gov, which is accessed directly through the portal. Standard processing is $140, though you may qualify for a reduced fee ($125) if you hold credentials like TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, or a TWIC card.

Step 5 – Submit Fingerprints

  • Once your biographic info is accepted and the fee is paid, you will receive an email with instructions on how to provide fingerprints through a TSA-accepted collector.

After You Apply

  • Processing Time: The TSA generally processes applications within 30 daysof receiving your fingerprints.
  • Validity: If granted, your Determination of Eligibility is typically valid for five (5) years.
  • Select Recurrent Training Center: Once you receive your final “Determination of Eligibility” email, you must log back into the portal to select Recurrent Training Center as your flight training provider. We will then be notified and can work with you to schedule your training.
