CE-500 UPGRADE / PRIOR EXPERIENCE TRAINING course OVERVIEW

The CE-500 Upgrade / Prior Experience Course is designed for pilots with qualifying Citation or CE-500 experience who are pursuing CE-500 PIC qualification. Conducted in an FAA-approved Part 142 training environment, the program combines ground instruction, briefing and debriefing sessions, simulator training, and practical evaluation.

Training emphasizes aircraft systems, procedures, operational decision-making, and PIC-level proficiency while recognizing previous training and experience.


Who Is This Course For?

This course may be appropriate for pilots who:

• Are upgrading from SIC to PIC operations in the CE-500
• Have recently completed approved CE-500 Initial or Recurrent training
• Hold a CE-560XL type rating with qualifying recent training experience
• Hold an ICAO-issued foreign pilot license with a CE-500 PIC type rating
• Are seeking a streamlined path to CE-500 PIC qualification
• Need practical simulator-based training focused on PIC-level proficiency

Eligibility Requirements

If no ATP Certificate is sought

Pilots must:
Hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate with Airplane Category and Instrument Rating

Hold a Multi-Engine Land Rating without centerline thrust limitation
AND meet at least one of the following:

Have completed 61.55 SIC training in the CE-500 and successfully completed a Part 142 approved Initial or Recurrent CE-500 training curriculum within the previous 13 months
OR
Hold a CE-560XL type rating and have completed Initial, Transition, or Recurrent CE-560XL or CE-560XLS training with Honeywell Primus 1000 avionics within the previous 24 calendar months
OR
Hold a foreign pilot license issued by a contracting State to ICAO with an Instrument Rating (IR) and a Pilot-in-Command Type Rating in the CE-500




If an ATP Certificate is Sought

 Pilots must:
Meet eligibility requirements of FAR 61.153

Hold a Multi-Engine Land Rating without centerline thrust limitation

Hold an ATP-CTP Course Completion Certificate and have passed the knowledge test satisfying FAR 61.156
AND meet at least one of the following:

Hold a Pilot-in-Command Type Rating in the CE-500
OR
Have completed 61.55 SIC training in the CE-500 and successfully completed a Part 142 approved Initial or Recurrent CE-500 training curriculum within the previous 13 months
OR
Hold a CE-560XL type rating and have completed Initial, Transition, or Recurrent CE-560XL or CE-560XLS training with Honeywell Primus 1000 avionics within the previous 24 calendar months

Additionally, pilots must:
Meet aeronautical experience requirements of FAR 61.159
OR
Meet restricted privileges experience requirements of FAR 61.160

Additional FAA ATP eligibility requirements may apply for pilots seeking ATP certification during training.

Training focuses on practical Citation Ultra CE-500 operations and PIC-level proficiency, including:

  • Preparation for FAA Certification Standards

Training emphasizes practical application through realistic scenarios that reinforce decision-making and procedural consistency.

Level D Full Flight Simulator Training

Training is conducted in RTC’s FAA-qualified Level D Full Flight Simulator located in Tampa, Florida and equipped with Honeywell Primus 1000 avionics. Simulator-based training allows pilots to practice in a controlled environment that supports effective learning and skill development.

  • Real-world flight scenarios
  • Aircraft handling and procedures

RTC maintains its simulators in-house to provide dependable training schedules and consistent simulator availability.

FAA Training Requirements

The CE-500 Upgrade / Prior Experience Course is conducted as an FAA-approved Part 142 training program and is designed for qualified pilots seeking CE-500 PIC qualification based on previous training and experience.

For qualified applicants, RTC can administer an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification check during the course. Pilots may also complete High Altitude Endorsement training in accordance with FAR §61.31(g), if requested and qualified.

The course satisfies applicable requirements of:

– FAR §61.58
– FAR §61.57(a), (b), (c), and (d)
– FAR §61.63(d)
– FAR §61.157(b)
– FAR §61.31(g) (when High Altitude Endorsement training is completed)

Upon successful completion, qualified pilots may earn a CE-500 Type Rating and, when applicable and qualified, an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate.
